If you’ve been coming to Mahzu for years, welcome back — and if this is your first time finding us, we’re glad you’re here. We recently launched this new website, and it felt like the right moment to share a little about who we are and where we come from.
It Started with Fish
Our family has been working with seafood for three generations. Long before Mahzu existed, we were learning how to judge the quality of a cut — how to tell the difference between good fish and great fish. When our family moved to the United States, we knew we wanted to bring that knowledge with us, not just as a skill, but as something to share.
That’s how Mahzu was born. We’re a family that loves great food, and opening a Japanese restaurant in Freehold felt like the most natural way to pass that love along to our community.
Twenty Years and Counting
Mahzu has been part of Freehold for over twenty years now. We don’t have the sleek, minimalist look of a brand-new spot — and we’re proud of that. Our restaurant has a warmth to it, a vintage character that regulars know well. What we will always promise is a clean, welcoming space and food prepared with real care.
Behind the scenes, we source our fish from the same suppliers that serve high-end omakase restaurants. Our chefs are trained in that same tradition, which means the craftsmanship behind every piece is something you can taste. Whether you’re here for a quick lunch roll or a fun hibachi experience, the quality of what’s on your plate is always the priority.
More Than a Restaurant
We’ve always thought of Mahzu as a neighborhood place. We sponsor local schools, help with community events, and try to be the kind of business that gives back to the people who’ve supported us for two decades.
At its core, Mahzu is a family restaurant — and we mean that in every sense. We want you to feel at home when you walk through our door. Whether it’s your first visit or your hundredth, our goal is the same: good food, a genuine welcome, and the kind of experience that brings you back.
We’d love for you to stop by. Take a look at our menu, make a reservation, or just walk in — there’s always a seat for you at Mahzu.
